Richard A. Smith Jr.

East Kingston - Richard A. Smith Jr. passed away at Exeter Hospital on August 30 after an extended period of failing health. He had valiantly fought Kidney disease for more than ten years.

Dick was born on February 21, 1947 in Exeter, the oldest son of Richard A. Smith Sr. and Eva L. (Sampson) Smith. He attended school in East Kingston and graduated from Exeter High School in 1965. He attended NH Technical College in Concord and majored in Computer Programming. In 1967 he enlisted in the US Army and served four years in the Signal Corps.

When he left the military he returned to East Kingston and the family farm where he worked with his father. He was a member of the NH Farm Bureau Association and involved in Young Farmers. He was a member of the Wingold Grange, East Kingston Fire Department, East Kingston Community United Methodist Church, and served six years as selectman of the town of East Kingston. Later he was involved in various town committees and volunteered in many capacities.

Dick worked full time on the farm until the cows were sold in 1986. He and his dad transitioned the farm to a beef, vegetable, and hay operation. This new focus allowed him to work with many local builders in the fall, winter and early spring. The farm always came first and he was always busy cutting hay, cutting wood, raising beef cattle, and working his horses. He loved the land and was an encyclopedia of farm related facts. He never stopped learning, teaching or exploring farm related topics.

He is survived by his brother, Herbert and wife Marian of Exeter; his sister, Jan of East Kingston; his brother, Ron of East Kingston; his nephews, Jeremy of Exeter; and Christopher of Portland, Oregon; and his beloved grand niece, Jenna of Exeter.

He will be missed by his dogs, Penny and Rex. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard A. Smith Sr. and Eva L. Smith.

A private service for the family will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the East Kingston Community United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.
