Eva L. Smith





East Kingston - Eva L. Smith died May 25 at Exeter Hospital with her family by her side

She was born April 14, 1919 in Winthrop Mass., to Charles and Lavinia (Yaw) Sampson. She moved to Wakefield Mass. in 1929 and graduated from Wakefield High School.

She attended secretarial school in Boston and later worked at the First National Bank in Boston. During the war she worked for Slater Manufacturing in Wakefield.

On March 16, 1946 she married Richard A. Smith of East Kingston and moved to what would become the family farm.

She was active in the East Kingston Community Methodist Church, serving as president of the Women’s Guild, Superintendent of the Sunday school, and chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

She was a school board member for 21 years, served on the NH state school board and for 12 years served as secretary treasurer of SAU 16. She was an active member of the PTA, Wingold Grange 308 and East Kingston Fire Association. She was a 4-H leader and a Cub Scout den mother.

She returned to work in the 1960’s at Rockingham School for Special Children. She later worked at Main Street School and the Exeter Regional Vocational-Technical School as a secretary. She worked there until her retirement and then worked part time as office manager for Dr. Harold Edelstein.

She is survived by her sons; Richard A. Smith Jr. of East Kingston, Herbert C. Smith and his wife Marion of Exeter, and Ronald F. Smith of East Kingston; her daughter Jan L. Smith of East Kingston, her grandsons Jeremy Smith of Exeter, Christopher Smith of Portland Oregon, and beloved great granddaughter Jenna of Exeter, and many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years Richard A. Smith Sr.; and her brothers, Fred Sampson, and Henry Sampson.

She will be sorely missed by her special cats: Blacky, (who she rescued and hand raised) Buffy, Muffin, and her two dogs.

A memorial service in her memory will be held at the East Kingston Community United Methodist Church, at 2 PM on Sunday, June 1, 2014.
