Joyce Cartwright Allen









Exeter - Joyce Cartwright Allen, 84, of 1 Meadow Lane, Exeter, New Hampshire died peacefully on September 20th at the Oceanside Center in Hampton, following a stroke and declining health.

She was born on September 17, 1932 in Danvers, Mass., the daughter of Calton O. and Pauline (Allen) Cartwright.

Joyce graduated from Danvers High School in 1950 and from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists in 1952. She enjoyed her career and patients as a dental hygienist for many years in the seacoast area and previously in Portland, Me. and Boston, Mass.

She is survived by her daughter Meredith C. Allen and son-in-law Gary P. Stevens of North Beach, Md.; her son Mark Fuller Allen of Exeter; her granddaughter Tiffany Douglass of Alameda, Calif.; as well as her close cousins Gil Allen of Brunswick, Me., and Ruth Sanderson and Ken Allen both of Melbourne, Fl. She was predeceased by her husband Richard “Dick” Allen in 2011.

WE REMEMBER: A longtime resident of Exeter, Joyce brightened the lives of many with her cheerful nature, outgoing personality and beautiful smile. She was a member of the Exeter Congregational Church, the Exeter Lions Club and the Red Hats Society, and was an active contributor of her beautiful hand-knitted Christmas stockings, hats and mittens to numerous charities. She cherished her family, her many Exeter friends and lifelong childhood friends, including her best friend Jane Trenholm of Stoneham, Mass.

SERVICES: A celebration of life open reception for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 3rd from 2 – 5 p.m. at The Exeter Inn, 90 Front Street, Exeter. Colorful attire is encouraged per Joyce’s request.

Floral arrangements may be sent to The Exeter Inn on the morning of October 3rd; arrangements will be shared subsequently with the residents of Oceanside Center where she spent her final weeks. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the breast cancer foundation of one’s choice is suggested.  Burial will be private.
