Richard F. Allen
EXETER – Richard Fuller (Dick) Allen, 82, died Wednesday Sept. 14, 2011, at Exeter Hospital following a brief illness.
Dick was born Sept. 25, 1928 in Stoneham, Ma, the son of Myra (Fuller) and Nelson Lord Allen. He attended Malden, Ma. high school and graduated from the University of Southern Maine and Denison University where he started his lifelong brotherhood with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Cartwright Allen; his daughter, Meredith C. Allen and her partner Gary P. Stevens of North Beach, Md; his son Mark F. Allen of Exeter; his granddaughter, Tiffany A. Douglass of Annapolis, Md; his brother Lt. Col. (Ret) Joseph K. Allen of Newport News, Va; a nephew David Allen and a niece Alexis (Allen) Hawley. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert.
Following his service in the U.S. Navy, he enjoyed many years as a salesman traveling the back roads of New England.
He had a long and industrious life with many interests, including hiking, skiing, tennis, sailing, letter-writing and community service. A longtime resident of Exeter, he was active in the church and town, serving as VFW Chaplain and a member of the Exeter Lions Club. Formerly as a resident of Portland, Me., he was active in Jaycees, and the Boy Scouts as a troop leader.
He remained cheerful and outgoing throughout his life, enjoying many friendships and setting an example of compassion, including as an organ donor providing the hope of renewed life for others.
His laugh and firm handshake will be missed by his friends and family.
