William J. "Willy" White
Exeter - William J. "Willy" White, 94, of Exeter died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at his nephew's home in Brentwood.
A lifelong resident of Exeter, he was born here January 5, 1916, the son of the late Edmund and Louise (Cloutier) White.
Willy worked on the Linden Street farms of Frank Brown and Fran Wadleigh while still a school boy. Here weeding carrots or hoeing corn, he found his first "arrowhead" and a lifelong interest in prehistory was born. As a young man he collected many artifacts while working on farms in Kensington, cultivating the fields of Frank Kimball, Hibbert Baker and Sherman Shaw and widened his explorations by walking or bicycling to search plowed ground in surrounding communities.
He was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Army and saw combat in New Guinea and the Philippines.
In 1947, the New Hampshire Archeological Society was founded and soon Willy was participating in the Society's excavations. In 1982, he received the Society's Chester Price Award. Today, the plowed fields around Exeter where Bill collected have all but vanished, but his sharp-eyed and energetic searching has yielded a wealth of material from the area's long and complex prehistory. His collection of thousands of pieces, each carefully marked to locality was generously donated to the Society in 2004.
Family members include his nephews, Bruce, Timothy, Peter and Kenneth White.
He was predeceased by his siblings Marion, Madelyn, George and Paul.
A Celebration of his life will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter on Friday, April 9th at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday, April 8th from 6-8 PM. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. If desired donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 41 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909.
