Brentwood, NH - Esther Sutherland Thompson (Towne), 103, died May 22, 2014.

She was born to the late T. Walter and Isabel Towne (Sutherland) July 3, 1910, in Newburyport, MA. She married the late N. Stanley Thompson in 1932, and they lived together in Newburyport, MA for most of their 66 years together.

Esther was active in the Belleville Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Service Club. She was also a member of the Choral Society of Newburyport for many years. Esther was involved with Girl Scouts as a leader where the scouts knew her as Sunshine.

Esther spent her last years at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, NH. She had a great wit and a smile for all.

Esther is survived by three children: R. David Thompson and wife Barbara, Bucksport, ME, Eleanor R. Knight, Bellefontaine, OH, and Mary A Fowler-Walton, Epping, NH. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Robin A. Roaf, Eliot, ME, Karen J. Sawyer, Newbury, MA, Donna M. Roaf, Haverhill, MA, Pamela L. Sawyer, Groveland, MA, Glenn Thompson, Strong, ME, Donald Thompson, Holden, MA, Kathy Strickland, Searsport, ME, Beverly Kostusyk, Winterport, ME, Andrew Thompson, Washington, ME, Sheryl Dolan, Lakesville, OH, Sharon Robinson, Quincy, OH, Mary Clem, Bellefontaine, OH, Ellen Trout, Lakesville, OH, Leroy Clem, Lakesville, OH, Teresa Webb, Louisiana and 32 great grandchildren and 29 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Esther was pre-deceased by 5 sisters: Anne Towne, Alice Towne, Eleanor Towne, Edna Jewett and Pauline Bishop.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in Esther’s name be made out to the Belleville Congregational Church of Newburyport. A memorial service celebrating Esther’s long life will be held at 4 PM Sunday, June 8th at the Belleville Congregational Chapel, 300 High Street, Newburyport, MA.
