Catherine Nims Swett
Catherine Nims Swett, age 72, wife of Richard W. Swett, Sr. passed away peacefully on November 16, 2012 as a result of complications from Parkinson Disease. A native of Darien, CT, Cathy was born on November 6, 1940 to the late Thomas L. Nims and Barbara Beach Nims. She was the granddaughter of Charles W. Nims and Catherine Smith Nims of Greenfield, MA, and Wesley H. Beach and Flora Miller Beach of Beverly Hills, CA.
Cathy graduated from Darien High School (1958) and from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1962. Cathy married Dick Swett on February 23, 1963. The couple moved to Stratham, NH, in October 2008 from Pittsburgh, PA, where they raised their family of four boys. Throughout her married life Cathy was a teacher and an antique dealer.
Genealogy was one of Cathy's passions. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters and cousins working on many family history projects, including the writing of complete genealogy histories of the Swett, Nims, Beach and Teller families. At the time of her death Cathy was a member of Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Bethel PA Fife and Drum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Junior League and the NIMS Family Association. Cathy collected early American antiques as well as other memorabilia. Her greatest legacy was her devotion to her family as a wife and mother to her four sons. Cathy was a strong minded woman with a determined sense of purpose in guiding her family.
In addition to her husband and predeceased son, Thomas Nims Swett, Catherine is survived by her sons, Dr. Jay Williams Swett, his wife, Lisa and three grandsons, Benjamin, Alexander and Jeremiah of Exeter, NH; Dr. Jeffrey Teller Swett, his wife Ann Marie and a grandson, James of Baltimore, MD; Richard W. Swett, Jr., Esq. his wife Magdalena, and a grandson, Julian, and a granddaughter, Vivian Nims, of Indianapolis. She is also survived by her sister Susan Nims Scott of Yorktown, VA and her cousin, David W. Nims of Colrain, MA. Her sister, Nancy Nims Mullins, predeceased her but she is survived by her brother-in-law Dr. James M. Mullins III and her nephew, James Anderson Mullins. She is survived by her brother in law, William E. Swett, of Groton, MA, and bother in law and sister in law Jay Teller Swett and Elizabeth Deemer Swett of Charlottesville, VA. She has numerous nephews, nieces and cousins on the Nims and Swett side of the families.
Services will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may visit with the family Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 5-7 PM. Interment will follow in the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, MA.
