Helen Elizabeth (Liz) Snider
Helen Elizabeth (Liz) Snider was born October 21, 1918, in Warroad, Minnesota, third
child of Ethel Rugland Fosmark and Alexander Fosmark, and died in Portsmouth, New
Hampshire October 18, 2011.
Raised in Minnesota, she attended the University of North Dakota and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts and ateaching certificate.
She taught high school until her marriage to Russell E. Snider. They had been married 65 years at the time of his death in 2005.
She also completed business school and worked for the United States Army in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
The Sniders lived in Des Moines, Iowa, St. Paul, Minnesota, Melrose, Massachusetts and finally
Seacoast New Hampshire.
She worked at a number of interesting jobs until she retired from MassBank in Melrose, MA. She was happiest when caring for her grandchildren.
Liz had a passion for literature, theatre and current affairs. Losing her eyesight ten years
ago she was grateful to her friend Janet Taylor who read to her frequently, and, more
recently hospice volunteer Marsha Filion.
Born before women were allowed to vote she
was a strong supporter of Hilary Clinton’s bid for election and hoped to live to see a
woman in the White House. Even without vision and dependent on a wheelchair she was
passionate about voting in every election and encouraged others to do so.
Liz was pre-deceased by her siblings Margaret Cooley and Stephen Fosmark and her
beloved husband Russell with whom she looked forward to being re-united.
She loved dearly her daughter Maren Tirabassi and son-in-law Donald, her grandson Matthew
Tirabassi and his wife Julia, her granddaughter Maria Mankin and her husband David. As
illness limited her activity she enjoyed a wider scope by following their activities through
stories and Skype.
Liz and her family are deeply grateful to the compassionate care of staff at Langdon
Place of Exeter, Langdon Place of Dover, SolAmor Hospice and especially Clipper
Harbor Home in Portsmouth where the hard and frightening days at the end of her life
were met with kindness, skill and smiles.
A Memorial Service will be held on at 1:00 PM, November 12, 2011 at Union Church of
Madbury, UCC, 20 Town Hall Road, Madbury, NH.
Plants are welcome at the service
and they will be given away to brighten other lives. Liz would be honored by
contributions to a charity or justice concern that is meaningful to the giver. Liz was
particularly concerned during her final days by the drought and suffering in East Africa.
Arrangements have been made through Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter, NH.
