Margery A. Richards

Margery A. Richards, named for her beloved mother, Margery Porter Roberts of England, died peacefully at her son's home Friday, April 11.

Born on September 14, 1924 in Boston and raised in New York City, Winchester, Mass., and Gilmanton, NH.

Margery fell in love with Exeter when her husband, Paul W. Richards, uncharacteristically took a wrong turn and drove through the town. They bought their house on Locust Ave. in 1947 and she literally threw away the key.

Margery's love flowed from her home to her neighborhood and to her community. Her house was open to strays of all kinds and she was a mother to many. Kindness, generosity and forbearance were her hallmarks. Quiet strength was her demeanor.

Following the razing of several architecturally significant buildings, Margery helped pass the town's first zoning laws. She was also a founding member of the Park St. Common Folk, a group formed to stop the planned construction of a fire substation on the Park St. Common. Despite working the night shift at the Rockingham Nursing Home, Margery found time to be a classroom volunteer, Brownie and Cub Scout leader, planning board member, and crossing guard.

Family members include siblings Barbara E. Golden and William H. Roberts; children Paul David Richards, Margery Carpenter, Robert Richards, Barbara Richards, and John Richards; and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Margery was predeceased by her husband Paul and brothers Robert and Charles Roberts.
