Raymond A. Paul

Raymond A. Paul, 73, of Exeter, NH passed away at Oceanside Center in Hampton, NH on March 8, 2015. He was born in Bristol, CT on October 24, 1941 to Max and Elizabeth (Aakjar) Paul and was married to Judy (Bowen) Paul.

Ray graduated from Bristol High School and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Teachers College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University). He taught at Bristol Eastern High School and was a guidance counselor at West Woods School. Later he worked in insurance and became the accounting manager at Marsh & McLennan in Hartford, CT. He and his family moved to Fairport, NY in 1981, then to Exeter in 1993. He retired from Marsh’s corporate professional standards team in 2007. Ray’s love of travel served him well during a career in which he visited every Marsh office in the U.S. and Bermuda.

He will be remembered as larger than life, with a quick wit and a love of musicals, words, and making humorous observations of things he encountered. His close friends could count on him for a funny nickname and any kind of favor. He was eternally grateful for the influence of the late John Whitcomb and his wife Mernie, and did his best to live up to their example.

Ray is survived by his wife of 46 years, his daughter Heidi Roberts and her husband Chris of Skokie, Illinois, and grandsons Noah and Ben Kiefer of Eichenstruth, Germany, sons of his late daughter Gretchen Kiefer. He leaves behind cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family.

Ray is predeceased by his siblings Gertrude, Eleanor Suchinski, Mildred, Marjorie Kirkwood, and Russell, and his beloved mother-in-law Elisabeth (Hazen) Bowen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21st at 11:00 A.M. at First Congregational Church of Kingston, NH. Please, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Bristol Historical Society, P.O. Box 1393, Bristol, CT 06011-1393.
