He was born in Lawrence, MA, the son of the late Joseph D. O’Hearn, Sr. and Irene (McNeilly) O’Hearn Avery. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He loved spending time with family and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting.  His passion was freshwater bass fishing. Joe also loved and enjoyed his Labrador retrievers.

At the age of seventeen Joe went to work as a lumberjack in northern Aroostook County, Maine in the days before chainsaws and where horses were the skidders. It was there he met his lifelong friends. The lumber camp transformed into a deer hunting camp where Joe traveled to each fall for sixty years to spend a week hunting deer with his buddies in the Great North Woods.
