Daniel J. Murphy, Jr.


(Exeter, NH.  April 12) Daniel J. Murphy, Jr. of Exeter, New Hampshire, died  in Exeter New Hampshire at the age of 100. 

Mr. Murphy, the son of Daniel J. and Mary T. (Curran) Murphy was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on March 29, 1910. 

He is survived by six children, daughters Alice McCarthy of Boxford, Massachusetts, Gale Kunkel of Meeker, Colorado, Kathleen Gutting of Charlotte, Vermont, Lyn Murphy of Temecula, California and sons Daniel Murphy III of Boxford, Massachusetts and David Murphy of Durham, New Hampshire, fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. 

His beloved wife of seventy-two years, Evelyn M. (Eastman) Murphy, died in 2008.

Mr. Murphy was a graduate of Lawrence High School and Harvard College, Class of 1931.  A longtime resident of North Andover, Massachusetts, he spent his entire working life with Arlington Trust Company, a Lawrence, Massachusetts commercial bank.  He served a President and Chief Executive Office of Arlington Trust Company from 1953 to 1979, growing it to be the dominant bank in northeast Massachusetts with assets exceeding $1 Billion.  He served as a Trustee of Community savings Bank, St. John’s Preparatory School, The Greater Lawrence United Fund, Merrimack College and Bon Secours Hospital and a Director of Massachusetts Business Development Corporation, and he received the Fenton Citizenship Award from the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Wilkinson Good Citizenship Award from the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.   He was an avid horseman, known for his speed and endurance on the trails of North Andover, Woodstock, Vermont and Wickenburg, Arizona.

A Mass celebrating Mr. Murphy’s life will be at St. Michael’s Church, corner of Front and Lincoln Street, Exeter, NH on Thursday, April 15, at 10:00 am. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lawrence, MA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, 136 Water Street, Lawrence, MA 01841.
