Phebe Perry Mixter

Phebe Perry Mixter, 90, of Exeter, New Hampshire, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at RiverWoods in Exeter, following a brief illness.

She was born Phebe Baker Perry on December 22, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Evelyn and Henry Eldridge Perry. Phebe grew up in Cincinnati, and Terre Haute, Indiana, attended Park/Tudor School in Indianapolis and was a 1942 graduate of Vassar College. Following graduation, she was an employee of Baldwin Pianos in Cincinnati. It was there she met the love of her life and subsequent husband of 64 years, James Murchie Eaton Mixter.

Jim and Phebe made their home in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they resided at "Baker's Acres," her family's home for seven generations. It was there Phebe and Jim raised their three children. During this time, Phebe was involved in a wide array of civic interests, including the Cincinnati Garden Club, The Colonial Dames, the Rosie Reds, and the Guilds of the Cincinnati Opera and Symphony. She had a lifelong passion for gardening and the outdoors. She and Jim loved to fish, and they frequently traveled to the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and, in later years, Grand Lake Stream, Maine, in search of the best catch.

Upon Jim's retirement in 1978, the couple relocated to Little Boar's Head, New Hampshire, where they lived for another 25 years in "Sea Verge," a seaside home built by her great-grandmother in 1883. Their welcome mat was always out for family and friends. For many years, Phebe served as the New Hampshire Director and Secretary for Stratford Hall in Stratford, Virginia, and she also served on the board of the Piscataqua Garden Club. Jim and Phebe were very active members of Christ Church, Exeter. In 2004 they moved to RiverWoods in Exeter, NH.

Phebe is survived by her brother, Henry, of Seattle, Washington, her three children, Sudie Blanchard of York, Maine, and her husband Peter; James Mixter Jr. of Oakton, Virginia, and his wife Lolly; and Perry Mixter of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and his wife Jan; her niece, Martha Heilemann and her husband Rich; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband Jim, her brother, Howard Perry, and two sisters, Evelyn Perry Akin and Polly Perry Black, predeceased her.

There will be a memorial service celebrating Phebe's life at Christ Church Exeter on Saturday, November 20, at 1 p.m. After the service, there will be a reception in the Great Bay Room at RiverWoods at Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Christ Church Exeter, designating the James and Phebe Mixter Music Fund, 43 Pine Street, Exeter, NH 03833. Donations may also be made to the RiverWoods Benevolence Fund, 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter, NH 03833 or to Stratford Hall, c/o Robert E.
