Al Miltner, Sr.

He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou, and they recently celebrated sixty years of marriage. Al opened his first shoe store in Bayshore, N.Y. before moving his family and business to Rochester. NH, in 1964. Al lived in Rochester for forty years before retiring in 1998. Miltner’s Shoes on North Main Street was a Rochester landmark for many years. The business expanded to eight locations in three states, including Bootleggers Footwear Centers. Miltner’s Shoes continues to be a proud family tradition, run by his children.

Al was a devoted father and husband and loved serving his community. He served as President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and was named Citizen of the Year. Al was a Trustee and President of Frisbee Hospital. He was Chairman of the Shop Rochester Group and on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Rochester as well as on the BankEast Corp. He was actively involved in bringing the original Boy’s Club to Rochester and worked with the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Retail Merchants of New Hampshire. Al had served on the Small Business Administration board and was proud of his work as President for the Sterling Hill Condo Association and on the Renovation Committee for St. Michael’s Church. In earlier years, he was active in Dollars for Scholars and presented many innovative ideas to the Rochester Chamber including “Moonlight Madness” where merchants stayed open late and sold goods in their pajamas. Al was famous for his skinny legs.

Al was known to many and loved by all. He leaves his wife Mary, of Exeter, five children: daughter Gwen Ross of Rochester, son Albert Miltner & his wife Karen of Gilford; Laura Auger & her husband Dan of Farmington; Christine Millette & her husband Ed of Chichester; and son Peter Miltner & wife Jill of Rochester. In addition, Albert leaves fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four on the way. He leaves two special sisters-in-law, Marilyn Miltner of Huntington, NY and Ann O’Connor of Kennesaw, Georgia, in addition to many nieces and nephews and good friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Richard Miltner and a much loved aunt, Florence Tilden. Al was widely respected for his patience, wisdom, quirky sense of humor and fierce love for his family. He will forever leave a hole in our hearts until we meet again.

A celebration of life mass will be held at St. Michael Church, corner of Front and Lincoln Streets, Exeter on Friday, August 21, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
