Michelle Stavrou Marnicio
Michelle Stavrou Marnicio, 55, died peacefully in her Newfields home on Friday, November 4th after a brave battle with kidney cancer. Michelle was born in Keene on December 5th, 1960. She was the daughter of the late Muriel Gloria Stavrou and George Thomas Stavrou, both of Keene, NH. Michelle is survived by her husband Thomas U. Gage, daughter Ariana S. Marnicio, her beloved siblings Laurie Judd of Chandler, AZ, Timothy A. Stavrou and his wife Martha of Derry, Holly Stavrou Kuckler and her husband Scott of Exeter, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Michelle was a graduate of Exeter High School Class of 1978 and obtained her BA in Spanish from the University of New Hampshire Phi Beta Kappa in 1982. Michelle continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she graduated in 1985 with a Master of Arts in Latin American literature, a minor in Spanish pedagogy and continued with her doctoral studies there.
Michelle's passion for language led her to a career as an educator, initially as a Spanish professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Ohio State University, Dennison University, and the University of New Hampshire. For the last seventeen years, at her alma mater, Exeter High School, she worked tirelessly as a Spanish teacher and dedicated her time and energy to create a warm and welcoming environment for any student that entered her classroom. Michelle's commitment was seen through her service on the Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, coordinator for the National Spanish Exam for the state of NH, as an advisor for Hawk Pound and the classes of 2007 and 2012.
Michelle was also a valued member of St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Chapel and a volunteer for the Exeter Lion's Club. She loved travelling, reading and had a deep appreciation for art. She was, without a doubt, a beloved teacher and an incredible mother who raised an intelligent, sensitive and gifted daughter. Michelle was a wife, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend who will be missed by so many. We have all been so touched by all of the love and support she received throughout her struggle with cancer. Thank you to all who kept her in their thoughts and prayers, who cared for her, all who took the time to stop by and see her, and for all the flowers and gifts that were sent along. She was deeply loved and very special.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Michelle S. Marnicio Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is for a student of financial need who displays exceptional enthusiasm for Spanish language, literature or culture and plans to continue her/his studies in this area after graduation.
