Florence Loomis

NOTTINGHAM: Florence Rita (Scrosati) Loomis, 85, formerly of Dover, N.H., the loving wife of Edward Martin Loomis, passed away peacefully at her home on December 23, 2014.

Florence was born in Dover, NH. on June 21, 1929, to Louis J. and Lea Dilima (Cloutier) Scrosati. She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Florence lived most of her life in Dover, attending St. Charles Catholic School and graduating from Dover High School in 1948. She worked at downtown businesses including Dover Drug and Clarostat. Florence was most happy when attending events and activities involving her children and grandchildren. She and her husband, Edward, supported many local charities and school groups.

Florence was a devoted wife to Edward, who passed away on September 30, 2012. They met in Dover while he was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. They married in 1948. Over their 64 year marriage, they accomplished so much. They were fortunate to have traveled together to beautiful and historic places such as Italy, France, Hawaii, and Nevada. They loved visiting family in California, Florida, and Georgia.

Family and home were most important to Florence. She was famous for her cooking and baking, always cooking from scratch. Many of her holiday traditions were her own creations. She was an avid collector and scrapbooker of family artifacts. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary of any family member or close friend. Those who met Florence were always greeted by a warm smile and quiet laugh. Her friendships lasted a lifetime.

Florence is known for her very successful bingo playing and luck at the slot machines. An ardent Patriots fan, she knew the names of many of the players and followed them right up until their most recent game (thankfully, they won their December 20th game!). Florence loved to read and devoured books about historical events and people. Her addictions to Kendall Pond Italian sandwiches and Dunkin Donuts chocolate sticks were well known.

Florence is survived by her five children and their families: her son Martin and his wife, Dilcia, their children Chris, Cynthia Reich, Melissa and Dilcia; her daughter Marlene and her husband, Terry Frost, and their children Marcia (Cheney) Vitale and Meredith (Cheney) Mottram; her son Robert and his wife, Nancy, and their children Vanessa Mariano, Katherine Hardin and Robert; her daughter Nancy and her husband Robert Cooke, and her sons Kyle and Ben Stucker; her son Edward and his wife, Yvonne; and three great-grandchildren, Deion Purvis, Evelyn Loomis and Harrison Reich. She is also survived by her sister, Louise (Scrosati) Varney, and several nieces and nephews.

Florence is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Pfc. Albert Joseph Scrosati, who died in Luxembourg on February 20, 1945.

A graveside service with a committal ceremony will be held at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen later this spring. Arrangements will be announced at that time.

Florence’s family is eternally grateful for the care and support provided by the Rockingham County Visiting Nurse’s Association. They would also like to express their gratitude to the staff and caregivers from the Home Instead Senior Care agencies of Manchester and Portsmouth. Cathy, Debbie, Dianne, Kathy, Kim, and Sharron were amazing and compassionate throughout Florence’s journey. They were also blessed by the love and caring provided by Darlene Peterson, who kept Mom smiling, laughing, and beautiful for more than two decades.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Rockingham County Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, in care of: Community Relations: Attention- Vivian Brown Exeter Hospital 5 Alumni Drive Exeter, NH 03833-9905
