Kathryn Marian LeClair            











Kay was born March 3, 1921 in Kingston, NY, daughter of Allen Lewis Gillett and Kathryn May Cole. Kay grew up in Brooklyn, NY, then Longmeadow, MA. She graduated from The MacDuffie School for Girls with Honors in 1938. After WWII, she bred, raised and showed boxer dogs. In 1955 Kay married Lee Wulff, world-renowned fly fisherman & hunter, and assisted him with his filmmaking in Manhattan, Newfoundland, Norway and beyond. 

She later graduated from Keene State College with Honors in 1968, and received her M.L.S. from Univ. of Maine in 1970. She was a professional librarian for a number of years, and later ran a dog grooming business. In her golden years, she married Retired Colonel Joseph A. LeClair, and felt blessed to have finally found the true love of her life.

Kay was a sixty year of member of D.A.R. Chapters in NY, ME & NH. She served as Regent of the Eunice Farnsworth Chapter in Skowhegan, ME, State Chaplain in the Maine State D.A.R., and was a long-time supporter of the Burnham Tavern in Machias, ME. She was also a member of the Nat'l Society of New England Women, Descendents of Founders & Patriots, Daughters of American Colonists, Descendents of Ancient & Honorable Colonial Clergy, Huguenot Society, and Dutch Settlers of Albany. She was very proud of her 12 years as a Girl Scout, 2 years leading a troop. Kay was a long-time member of Old South Church in Farmington, ME. She valued her many lineal associations and the wonderful friendships she cultivated though them.

Kay had many interests including birdwatching, gemology, American History and antiquarian books, antiques, Japanese art, dogs, cats and the game of golf.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Elizabeth Gillett Hernstadt. She is survived by 3 step-sons Barry Wulff of Oregon, Allan Wulff of Virginia, and Michael LeClair of Maine, a god-daughter Jill Ross, a niece Stephanie Hernstadt of California, many cousins including James E. Van Orden III of Vermont and his family, her dearest friends Elayne Dudley and her daughter Kelly Flynn, who were as close to her as a daughter and granddaughter, and many other close friends, too many to name, who made such a long life-time memorable and were truly like family to her.

On July 16, 2016, a celebration of life service will be held at 2:30pm at Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Rd, Exeter, NH. A reception will follow.

She will be interred in a private family service at Blue Mountain Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery in Saugerties, NY at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kay's memory to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society Bring Us Home Campaign, 262 County Farm Rd, Dover, NH 03820.

EXETER, NH - Kathryn Marian (Gillett) LeClair, 95, died June 19, 2016 at Huntington Common in Kennebunk, ME, where she had been a resident for four and a half months.
