Carl Edward Krumpe, Jr.
Carl Edward Krumpe, Jr. passed away on November 1st, 2016 in Exeter, New Hampshire at the age of 83. The son of Carl Edward Krumpe, and Elizabeth Ann Krumpe, née Randall, Carl was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, where he attended elementary and high school. After graduating from Peoria High School, he attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville Indiana, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics, in 1955. He later served in the United States Army on bases in the United States and in Europe. Following his discharge from the Army he attended Brown University in Rhode Island, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Classics.
Carl taught at Roxbury Latin School in Massachusetts for a year before joining the faculty at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1960. For the next 38 years he was instrumental in introducing the Classics to thousands of students who attended that school. During his tenure there Carl served as a faculty member in the Classics, History and English departments, as well as Chairman of the Classics department. He also loved music, and his musical activities included hosting a classical music radio program, giving recorder lessons in adult education programs and serving as an organist and choir director at three local churches: The First Congregational Church in Georgetown, Massachusetts, and the West Parish Church and the Free Christian Church, in Andover, Massachusetts.
Carl is survived and missed by his family, which includes three children from his first wife (deceased), Louise Ann Tabor, née Sours: Michael Josef Krumpe, Andrew Charles Krumpe and AnnaJean Elizabeth Krumpe. His second wife (deceased), Elizabeth Krumpe, née Chamberlin, also had three children, William Henry Epstein (deceased), David Frederick Epstein, and Catherine Ann Epstein. In addition to his six children, he had ten grandchildren, all of whom are saddened by his passing, yet heartened by his love for them as well as his love of life.
At a later date, Carl’s family will announce plans for a memorial service at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and a burial service at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
