Dixon Hummel

Dixon (Dixie, Maggie) Hummel died on December 14, 2016.  She was the beloved wife of Dan Hummel, mother of Julia (Nathan) Hummel Ghoting and Chad (Lauren) Hummel, MeMe to Corinne and Nolan Hummel Ghoting, sister of Dianne Anthony and Ned Slawson, and daughter of Peg and Edwin Slawson.  Dixon lived a full life and a life full of love which she shared with all through her kindness and genuine caring.  She was a backyard gardener, wordsmith, baker of breads, and storyteller supreme. She loved early morning walks in all seasons and hiking with her friends and family on the mountains of Acadia. She loved heading out in her cherished kayak to appreciate the openness of water and how the sky and trees reflected in it.

Dixon was the consummate professional, working at Winnacunnet High School as a Speech and Language Pathologist and later as a tutor for Vocational Rehabilitation.  She collected interesting recipes, pots and planters, shells, and heart-shaped rocks.  She took beautiful photographs, wrote loving poetry, read voraciously, and traveled the country and the world, camping along the way.  Dixon could spend five minutes with a stranger and come away with their life story.  She never missed the opportunity to encourage a friend or celebrate an occasion. She was always ready to listen, making one feel heard, respected, and understood.

We will remember her for her appreciation of nature, her devotion to her family, friends, and community, and her love of laughter.  Dixon greeted the universe gratefully every morning and we will try to do the same, even though it's less bright without her.  She will be profoundly missed.  In memory of Dixon, tell your stories, appreciate each day, greet a new friend along the way, hug someone you love, and laugh with your whole soul as if your life depended on it.

A memorial service will be held on January 14, 2017 at 11am at FUUSE, the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter, 12 Elm Street, Exeter, NH 03833. In lieu of flowers, Dixon requested donations be made to Doctors Without Borders or a “Kitchen Fund” at FUUSE where she spent many fun-filled hours.
