Robert B. Hill

Exeter – Robert Buckman Hill, 91, of Exeter, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth with loving family at his side.

Robert was born on June 24, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Frederick H. and Edna B. (Scully) Hill.

Raised in Philadelphia, Robert graduated from Roxborough High School with the Class of 1937. He attended Drexel University before leaving school to join the U. S. Army Air Corps at the start of WWII. Robert was a flight instructor during the war and trained pilots on both the B-29 and B-17 aircraft. He married the love of his life, Isabel, in 1938 and the couple settled in Philadelphia to raise their family. After the service, Robert was a pilot for Eastern Airlines and moved his family to NH. He retired in 1978, after 33 years with the company. At the time of his retirement, Robert was the senior pilot at Logan Airport for Eastern Airlines. His favorite hobby was playing golf and he was a member of the Exeter Country Club for many years. He loved traveling with Isabel, and enjoyed his fall hunting trips and spring fishing trips with his good friends. Above all, Robert loved his family. His daughters were his pride and he particularly enjoyed playing with his great grandchildren.

Robert was an active member of the American Legion Post 32 of Exeter and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2179 of St Michael Parish in Exeter.

He is survived by his daughters Marguerite A. Baranek and her husband Michael of Exeter, Kathleen H. Browning and her husband Michael of Epping, Roberta H. Sturtevant and her husband Charles of North Hampton, his grandchildren Patricia Manges and her husband Alan, Calvin Krusen and his wife Barbara, Jessica Wessling and her husband Ron, Christopher Browning and his wife Candi, Matthew  Sturtevant and his wife Jessica and Patrick Sturtevant, 15 great grandchildren,  and 2 step-great grand children, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by Isabel (Booth) Hill, his wife of 39 years, his infant son Robert C. Hill, his daughter Patricia S. Hill, his brother Yardley M. Hill and his granddaughter Michelle L. Krusen.

Visiting hours will be from 5 – 8 pm on Thursday, December 17, 2009 in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Rd., Exeter, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 18, 2009  in St. Michael Church, at the corner of Front and Lincoln Streets, Exeter, NH. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Flowers are acceptable or if desired, donations may be made in Robert’s name to a charity of one’s choice.
