Stanley J. Gorski
Portsmouth - Stanley J. “Steve” Gorski, 97, passed away peacefully on December 19, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Steve was born January 21, 1915, in Exeter, the son of the late John and Josephine (Matuszak) Gorski.
A lifelong resident of Exeter, he proudly served for over four years in the jungles of New Guinea through the end of the War. He then married his loving wife Veronica, and they happily shared 63 years until her death in 2009. Together, they owned and operated Ronnie’s Reupholstering and Slipcover Shop from their home for more than 40 years and they loved Polka dancing.
He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn Dooda (husband Joseph) of Raleigh, NC and Janice Hayes (husband James) of Hampstead; four grandsons, Stephen Dooda (wife Katrina) of Raleigh NC, Brian Dooda (wife Garnett) of Alexandria VA, Christopher Hayes (wife Rashelle) of Sturbridge MA, and Bryan Hayes (wife Happy) of Portland ME; three great-grandchildren, Henry and Eliot Dooda and Aaron Hayes; and one brother, Edward Gorski of Exeter. He was preceded in death by his brothers Alexander, Joseph, and Henry and sisters Mary, Valerie, and Josephine.
Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and enjoyed many wonderful times with his family, especially at the camp he owned with his wife on White's Pond in Ossipee. He dearly loved his four grandsons, providing them countless cherished memories of times spent fly fishing, swimming, and telling stories by the campfire.
An avid fly fisherman, he was always seeking that elusive next trout, and in the off-season he enjoyed tying flies. Steve loved to share stories of his fishing adventures and his time in the war with his family, who could never get enough. He was an active communicant of St. Michael Parish in Exeter and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 32 for many years. For the past two and a half years, his good-natured sense of humor was enjoyed by many at the Edgewood Centre. He will be dearly missed.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012, from 5-7 PM, at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.
