Henry A. J. Garand


Newburyport, MA - Henry A. J. Garand, 89 of Seabrook, NH and Lake Wales, FL passed away May 19, 2012.

Born in Newburyport, MA on January 14, 1923, he was the son of Henry and Catherine (Martin) Garand.

He was raised in Newburyport and graduated with the class of 1940.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. He served as a P-47 Armorer with the 379th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter group, 9th Air Force in Europe. He participated in the American Theater, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Alsace, Central Europe, France, and Germany from 1944 to 1945. Henry has received the French Legion of Honor Award.

Henry was an avid trucker all his life. He started out with his father, Henry Sr. in trucking, owned and operated Terminal Transportation first out of Newburyport then moving to Salisbury till 1969. He continued working in the trucking business at Graf Brothers and Downeast Dispatch. After years in the business, Henry enjoyed sitting in his screen porch watching the trucks ride by on busy Route 27 in Florida.

Married to Rachael (Pierce) in 1969, in Hampton Falls, NH.

Henry is survived by his wife, Rachael of 43 years. One sister, Sue and Bert French, Lakewood, NJ; two daughters, Dianne and William Buxton, Kensington, NH; Susan and Randy Kimball, Salem, NH; four step-children; Carol and Robert Maguire, Dover, NH; Gary Simpson, Merrimack, NH; Kevin and Barbara Simpson, Myrtle Beach, SC; and Eileen and Tom Conner, Newfields, NH. 13 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, with a large family of cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Frank Jeffrey Garand .

SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Newburyport, MA at 11a.m. on June 18, 2012.  In lieu of flowers, a donations may be made in his memory to the Honor Flight New England, P.O. Box 16287, Hooksett, NH 03103 or to one of your choice.
