Barbara "Cam" Forbes
Cam Forbes as she has been known since college days, died October 21st after a brief illness at the Ridge Senior Residences in Exeter, NH at the age of 86.
Born Barbara Jane Cameron, in Southampton New York on September 28, 1925, she grew up and lived most of her life on eastern Long Island. She graduated from Southampton High School and then Skidmore College, where she met a dashing Charlie Forbes from Colgate University. They married and moved to Quogue to raise an ever-expanding family of children....six in all.
Cam and Charlie were part of the original St Patrick's Day parade committee in Westhampton Beach and were honored to serve as Grand Marshals. Cam headed the parade in March of 1989 much to the delight of her family and friends.
They constructed a float in her honor that took 1st prize that year!
Cam's great joy was her family but she was also known as a crack crossword puzzler, usually completing the Sunday New York Times puzzle before noon...in ink!
She and Charlie hosted several famous treasure hunt parties in which teams were sent on great searches for clues throughout Westhampton, Quogue and environs.
These hunts always started with clues embedded in a crossword puzzle she created.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Susan Lilley and Robert, Thomas Forbes and Kathleen, Cameron Ann Howard and Douglas, Lisa Ryan and Parker, Shelley Natalie and Joseph, Melissa Levi and Gary; four grandchildren: Melissa and Christopher Natalie, Devon and Brooke Ryan. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles B. Forbes.
Services were held Saturday, at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church, West Hampton, NY.
A Memorial service will be held, Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2 pm at the Ridge at Riverwoods Living Room.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or the Make a Wish Foundation.
