Joseph R. Fitzgerald
Joseph R. Fitzgerald- “Joe,” passed away peacefully after battling a long term illness. He was born in Lowell, M.A. and the son of the late John W. and Lucy (Gelineau) Fitzgerald.
Roger, as he was known by family and dear friends was a light in the darkness. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved the game of golf, playing his organ and keyboard, and driving his Ford Explorer, which he called his “baby.”
His strong faith in God gave him a deep and great love for his family and friends, and was always there to lend a hand to those in need, he had a generous heart. He will be deeply missed by family and friends and all those he touched with his beautiful smile.
He retired from the MBTA Boston in 1991 as a Traffic Control Checker; He was a Veteran of the National Guard, Airforce, and Airforce Reserves. He was a pass member of the Elks Lodge in Lowell, M.A., and American Legion. He retired to Lakeland, Florida and formed a men’s golf group, joined the Foxwood Village bowling team, belonged to the Foxwood Village Association and was a Boy Scout leader in Lowell, M.A. in the late 1960’s to mid1970’s. After retirement in Florida, he briefly settled in Portsmouth, NH.
He is survived by his beloved wife Doris I. (Beauregard) Fitzgerald, daughter Karen E. (Fitzgerald) Cheney and husband Peter of Newmarket N.H., son Sean K. Fitzgerald and wife Christina of Nashua, N. H., grandchildren Jennifer L, (Cheney) Jankowski and husband Jesse of Methuen, M.A., and Brynn E. (Cheney) Gauvin and husband Keith of Deerfield, N.H., great grandchildren: Aiden, Isabelle, and Asher Gauvin.
He is predeceased by his brothers Alfred and Arthur Fitzgerald. He is survived by his sisters: Joan (Fitzgerald) Beauregard and husband Donald of Lowell, M.A., and Elaine (Fitzgerald) Racicot and husband Robert of E. Waterborough, M.E., brothers: Rene Fitzgerald and wife Donna of Dracut, M.A., Richard Fitzgerald of North Carolina, and Leo Fitzgerald and wife Carmen of Hollister N.H., many cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and dear friends in Lakeland, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Lung Association and Heart Association.
There will be a private burial.
