Robert J. Dow


Robert J. Dow, 77, of 380 Ocean Rd, Portsmouth died at his home with his wife and family by his side.  He was born Aug. 31, 1933 in Seabrook, N.H. the son of the late Leroy & Eleanore (Corthell) Dow.

He was a graduate of Amesbury High School following which he served in the Navy from 1955-1957.  When he returned home from the service he utilized his entrepreneurial spirit to own and operate several businesses in the seacoast area during his lifetime.  These included septic installation, trucking and several years operating Robert Dow’s Sand and Gravel, Inc.  Never quite content to retire, Bob then started a brush mowing business, which took him to California and Hawaii before he returned home to start a stump grinding business. Bob’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, tennis and golf.  In his younger days, he was a popular local stock car drag racer with over 100 victories.  He also won numerous bow and arrow target-shooting awards across New England.

He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn (Wardwell) Dow of 34 years and five children, son Terry of Manchester, NH, daughter Janice Viesel and her husband Ben Garcia of Rio Rancho, NM, and three step-children Robin Costello of El Cerrito, CA, Michael Costello of Santa Fe, NM, and Steven Costello and wife Kerri of Medway, MA; 4 grandchildren, Devon Costello, Jasmin Estes, and Jennifer and Jeffrey Costello; one sister Patricia St. Clair and husband Paul of Strafford, NH.  He was pre-deceased by his son Mark, and his sister Jackie Dunn.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and faithful dog Virgo.

A memorial service will be held at the Kensington Congregational Church, 108 Amesbury Road, Kensington, NH on Saturday, June 25th, at 1:30.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Rockingham VNA/Hospice 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH; Or, Brigham and Women’s Hospital International Mesothelioma Program/Housing c/o David J. Sugarbaker, MD.  Division of Thoracic Surgery 75 Francis Street Boston, MA 02115.  Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.
