Theodore "Ted" M. Doan Jr.


Stratham NH - Theodore “Ted” M. Doan Jr.  passed away on January 27, 2011 at Hyder Hospice House in Dover, NH home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

Ted was born October 2, 1929 and raised in Berwick, PA. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the armed services where he served proudly for the US Air Force for 14 years. Upon discharge from the service, he began his life long career, 23 years, as a facilities administrator at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ted and his wife, Marie, raised their family of 4 children in Woburn, Mass before moving to Stratham, NH in 1987 He retired as the Operations Manager from the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester in 1996.

Retirement lead to his most dedicated and enjoyable post – Grandfather. “Papa” as he was called had been an instrumental part in the lives of his grandchildren who resided closed to him – Liam, Clarissa, Jacqueline and C.J. – assisting with homework, web searches, school  projects, bus stop duty and little league baseball spectator. He was best known in their Stratham neighbor as the “Mr. Mom” at the bus stop trading recipes and giving advice for all the stay at home and working mom’s.

In 2005, he began his most important job as caretaker, for his beloved wife, after her illness began that year.  In the quest to better her life following her illness and find support for her, he founded and began the Exeter Chapter of DBSA – a peer support group that helps individuals who are struggling with depression and bipolar disorder come together. In his journey to help his wife, He helped numerous others. 

As an outlet for fun and a means of showing his appreciation for our troops, he joined the Pease Greeters organization in 2007. He kept a vigorous schedule between caring for his wife and thanking troops – but he never complained and embraced each day as a new adventure.

He is survived by his dedicated wife of 59 years, Mariette, and his four children and their families – Scott W. Doan and his wife Deborah, No. Hampton, NH,  Robert L. Doan and his wife, Lori, Sandown, NH, Lisa M. Hayes and her husband, Stephen, Stratham, NH and Leigh A. Drapeau, and her husband, David, Deerfield, NH and eight grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters – Barbara Carodiskey of Danville, PA, Nancy Linville of Harrisburg, PA and Alice Ann Monteith of Hummelstown, PA and many nieces or nephews who refer to him as their favorite “Uncle Ted”.

He is predeceased by two of his older siblings – brother, Joseph Doan, of Sunbury, OH and sister, Phyllis Johnson of Berwick, PA.

Calling hours and an opportunity to connect with the family will be held Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 from 3-5pm at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Rd, Exeter, NH.  A Celebration of Life will begin at 5 pm with a Masonic Service, heartfelt memorial service and reception to follow.

The family wishes to thank the many volunteers and staff of Seacoast Hospice who provided support and comfort during his brief but courageous battle with cancer.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Rd, Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Mount Horeb Lodge, 17 Arlington Rd, Woburn, MA 01801.
