Fae Barrett Demarest
7/18/1914 -11/16/2013
Fae Barrett Demarest died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the age of 99 at her home at Riverwoods in Exeter, New Hampshire.
She was born on July 18, 1914, in Provo, Utah. She was the eldest of six children born to Dr. Charles Elmer Barrett and Odessa Heninger Barrett. Although most of Fae’s childhood was spent in Ogden, Utah, the family moved to Chicago on two separate occasions while Fae’s father attended the University of Chicago Medical School. She also lived intermittently in Provo, Garfield and Salt Lake City while her father supported the family as an engineer, chemist and professor prior to finalizing his medical degree. After completing high school in Chicago and Ogden, Fae graduated from Weber Junior College in Ogden, with an Associate of Science Degree in 1933. She then moved to Salt Lake City with her family where her father established his medical practice. There she graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Teaching Certificate in 1937. Fae taught art for seven years in Salt Lake City. On a trip east in 1944 Fae visited New York City which she found fascinating and totally different from Salt Lake City. Determined to live in such an exciting place she took a job as a ticket seller at Pennsylvania Station on the busiest rail route: New York City to Washington, D.C. Penn Station seemed to Fae to be the center of the world with military, domestic and international travelers, including “dollar-a-year” men, experts in their field and celebrities, all working together on the war effort. Fae had the time of her life. There Fae met her future husband, John Demarest, Jr., a highly-decorated Air Force captain who had recently returned from service in England where he was a navigator on bombing and reconnaissance flights over Europe. They were married on June 8, 1946.
Fae lived in New York with her husband and first child until 1949 when the family moved to Salt Lake City where their second and third children were born. In 1951 after the start of the US involvement in the Korean War, Fae’s husband was recalled to Active Duty in the Air Force. The family moved to Germany in 1952 where they remained for 4 years as part of the Occupation Forces. After giving birth to her fourth child, Fae and her husband spent their vacations traveling to most of the European countries where they viewed the magnificent art works that Fae had studied in College. During the next 4 years, Fae and her family moved to New York, North Carolina, and back to Salt Lake City. Then in 1963, after 4 years in Hawaii the family moved to North Hampton, NH when Fae’s husband received his final assignment to Pease Air Force Base. North Hampton was to be Fae’s home for 42 years. After the death of her husband Fae moved to Riverwoods in Exeter where she lived contentedly for 8 years.
Fae’s experiences moving to new places as a child made it easy for her to adapt to the transitory life of the military wife. She enjoyed the adventure of new environments and new people. Fae was an avid reader and had a great interest in history and current affairs. She enjoyed meeting the presidential candidates when they came to NH every four years. Like her mother and grandmothers, Fae also loved gardening.
Fae is survived by her children, Hope Demarest Saltmarsh (Alexander) of Bow, NH, Nicole Lee Demarest (Joseph Schapiro) of Keene, NH, John Maynard Demarest of Warren, NH, and Michele Fae Demarest (John D Patterson, Jr.) of Lexington, MA, and her grandchildren, Jason (Tina) Saltmarsh of North Hampton, NH, Aaron (Sarah) Saltmarsh and Anthony Saltmarsh of Phoenix, AZ, Davis Saltmarsh of New York City, Rebecca Schapiro (Michelle Davidson-Schapiro) of Boston, MA, Sophie Schapiro of Brooklyn, NY, and Amy Patterson of St. Louis, MO and her two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Peyton Saltmarsh of North Hampton, NH. She is also survived by her sister, Jacqueline Barrett Tadje of Salt Lake City, UT. She is preceded in death by her brother, Dr. E. LeVerl Barrett, and her sisters, Lorraine Barrett Feinauer, Marjorie Barrett Allen and Elizabeth Gail Barrett, all formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah.
