Gertrude I. Davis








Gertrude I (Adam) Davis, 91, of Exeter, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Oceanside Center in Hampton.

She was born March 24, 1926 in Auburn, Maine the daughter of the late Hildege and Octavie (Lussier) Adam.

Gertrude moved to New Hampshire and on October, 6, 1951, married Clifford Davis. Together they raised three boys. She worked as a fancy stitcher at the Alrose Shoe Company and the Exeter Footwear Company.

She was a long time communicant of St. Michael’s Church of Exeter. Gert put her deep faith into practice through volunteerism, serving as a Pastoral Visitor to local nursing homes. Gertrude also embroidered baptismal bibs and made rosary beads destined for Catholic missions in Haiti. She also hosted Block Rosaries in her home.

Gertrude was bilingual and sought to maintain her first language by hosting a French club, informally known as Les Alouettes. Here, her friends would challenge each other’s English to French vocabulary, sing and converse in French.

She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Rose Marie Dube, Aurilee Grenier, Sister Lucille Adam and Georgie Demaine, Armand Adam and Venerand Adam; and a niece, Marie May Dube.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, Clifford Davis; three sons an their spouses, Richard and Priscilla Davis of Epping, Daniel and Diane Davis of Kensington, and Jim and Jody Davis of Exeter: three grandchildren, Chris Davis of Newfields, Meagan Davis of Hampton, and Nick Davis of Ossipee; seven great-grand children, Owen, Dominic, Joleigh, Cameron, Kylie, Emmie and Keagan; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Church on Front Street, Exeter at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 4. Burial to follow in the Exeter Cemetery.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may visit with the family from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, May 3, at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Rd, Exeter, NH, 03833.  Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to St. Vincent De Paul Community Assistance Center, 53 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833.
