Olive Brookes Calef
Olive Brookes Calef, aged 95, died peacefully on June 29, 2014 at The Ridge at Riverwoods, Exeter, New Hampshire. Olive was born July 30, 1918 in New London, New Hampshire, the daughter of Lillian Alice Moore and Thomas Russell Moore.
Olive was a graduate of the Baptist Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Harford Seminary Foundation, Hartford, Connecticut where she received her bachelor’s degree in education.
As an active member of the Stratham Community Church, Olive was the Sunday School Superintendent for 35 years. She was also active in town affairs as a member of the school board for six years and served as the Supervisor of the Checklist for ten years. She was a member of the Board of Adjustment for nine years, an Exeter Hospital volunteer, an active member of the Stratham Historical Society, Southeastern Retired Teachers member and a member of the New Hampshire Retired Teachers Association. She owned and operated Mrs. Calef’s Kindergarten in Stratham from 1954 to 1969. She then taught transitional first grade in Exeter, retiring in 1983.
Olive was predeceased by her husband, Robert Calef and brother, Thomas Holmes Moore. She is survived by her son Ronald Calef, his wife Carole and their three children, Devin, his wife Corrine, stepson David Pavlov, Brynn Hunt, her husband Kyle Hunt and their son Brooks, and Kiernan and her fiancé Josh Garfinkel. She is also survived by her daughter Susan Dow, her husband Peter Dow and their son Alexander Dow, along with several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private graveside service in August for family and friends at the Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham, New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.
