Francis A. Buchanan


Kensington – Francis A. Buchanan, 82, of Kensington died Monday, August 26, 2013, at the Exeter Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille, and his four children and their spouses:  Frances DeFreitas and her husband Alan of Kensington, NH, Mark Buchanan of Northwood, NH, Cynthia Dickinson and her husband Mitchel of Norlina, NC, and David Buchanan and his wife Sally of Kensington, NH. Also by three grandchildren:  Amanda Buchanan, Peter DeFreitas and Tucker Buchanan.  And by one great- grandchild: Georgia Ellison.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families. 

He was born in Lynn, MA on March 20, 1931, the second of six children of John and Dora (Livermore) Buchanan. He married Lucille C. Mara in 1953 and moved to Kensington in 1955.

Francis attended the Lynn school system finishing his education at Essex Agricultural and Technical High School. He served in the Army National Guard.  He worked in highway construction as an Operating Engineer and was a retired member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4.

Francis was an accomplished horseman and a life member of the American Quarter Horse Association, a lifetime member of the National Reining Horse Association and one of the founders of the New Hampshire Reining Horse Association, having been cited with a twenty five year accomplishment award in 1994. His was a lifetime passion with horses that culminated with the breeding and training of a number of award winning show horses.     

Francis believed in helping others, particularly, those less fortunate. Memorial donations may be made to Maryknoll Sisters, PO Box 311 Maryknoll, NY, 10545-0311.
