His early teaching days began in St. Louis, MO followed by the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon while his father was teaching at the University of Beirut.  John met Harriet while teaching in St. Louis and the two were married after John's return from Lebanon.  The couple lived in Washington DC for three years while John took a leave from teaching and worked for the US Naval Intelligence Service.

In 1956 John & Harriet moved to Michigan where they spent the next 10 years.  John taught in Grosse Pointe, became an elementary school principal, received his PhD and later became Superintendent of Schools in Alpena, Michigan and Bellevue, Washington.

In 1969 John continued teaching as a tenured Professor, heading the department of Educational Leadership at the University of Connecticut. While at UCONN he served on numerous boards for school systems working with administrators and superintendents.

John was very much part of each community he touched.   He had great interest in the National Railroad Association, gardening, wine tasting club, coin collecting, travel, singing, photography, tennis and held various positions with Rotary International and most recently the Mansfield Senior Center.

Since retiring to Riverwoods, Exeter, NH in April, 2010, John enjoyed a full life of golf, bridge, reading, napping and crafting cork board trays made from the empty wine bottles of his many new friends at the Boulders, Riverwoods.

John is loved deeply by his wife and three children: Elizabeth in NYC, Janis in Fremont, NH and John in Barrington, Illinois along with six grandchildren.
