Burke William Bigwood
Burke William Bigwood of Stratham, New Hampshire died peacefully with his family at his side on September 1, 2015.
He was born, In Albany, NY, June 11, 1927 the son of the late Burke L. and Florence (Pickett) Bigwood .
He went to the West Hartford, Connecticut schools. He served in the US Navy from 1945-1946 in the Philippines. Bill received his BA from the University of Vermont in 1951 where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the MBA from Babson College in 1975. He worked for the John Hancock Insurance, New England Life Insurance, and later ran his own company Bigwood and Associates.
He was active in swimming, tennis and squash receiving many awards over the years. He was a nationally ranked squash player. He retired to Winding Brook Stratham, New Hampshire in 1989 where he served on the Board for 15 years. Carolyn and Bill spent 33 enjoyable winters in Sarasota Florida.
Family members include his wife of 63 years of Carolyn (Fink) Bigwood, devoted father of his daughter Gail Werrbach and husband James of Bangor Maine, daughter Nancy Swanson and her husband Steven of Franklin Massachusetts, and his son William, Jr. of Sudbury Massachusetts. Also survived by beloved grandchildren Michael Swanson of Providence, Rhode Island, Matthew Werrbach of Burlington, Vermont, and Katherine Swanson of Revere, Massachusetts.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Church, corner of Front and Lincoln Streets, Exeter, Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception immediately following at the church. Private burial will be in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute – Jimmy Fund, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 and Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
